How to choose a fragrance based on your skin type

how skin type plays a role in perfume

Perfumes and colognes are individualistic, just like you! That’s why it’s possible to spritz a scent into the air and love it, and then hate it when you try it on your skin.

Many factors play a role on how a fragrance interacts with your skin. These factors include the bacteria on your skin, the pH level of your skin, your diet, how much you sweat, how much you move and everything in between.

Your skin type is perhaps the most important factor to consider when you’re selecting your signature scent. There are three main types: Oily skin, dry skin and combination skin.

These three skin types will play a huge role in the way your scent is absorbed on your skin.

Best fragrances for dry skin:

If your skin struggles to retain moisture, you may wish to consider a heavier scent to combat your dry skin because dry skin does not effectively hold scent.

Your best notes will include stronger notes such as spice, woods, musk and oriental.

If you have dry skin and find that you do not like the heavier scents, consider applying some non-scented moisturizer to your skin prior to applying perfume or cologne.

You may also wish to consider a scent that comes with a matching lotion, such as Green Tea by Elizabeth Arden or Ch L’eau by Carolina Herrera.

Best fragrances for oily skin:

Oily skin is able to hold top notes better, and this means your scent will last longer. This is because oily skin triggers a stronger reaction in the compounds of your fragrance.

But sometimes it also will exaggerate certain elements of the scent. This can be both good and bad, but it’s important to consider this interaction when shopping for your signature scent.

Citrus notes can be particularly good performers on oily skin.

If you have oily skin and still prefer muskier tones, remember to use a minimal amount. A little will go a long way.
